NY Magazine dared to mention Third Eye Blind in a post, and an angry mob came to the band’s defense, and that surprised them…

…Lately I’ve seen them pop up here and there on tumblr, and I never knew people were so into them!  I dunno, I guess I never thought of them carrying any long lasting significance in the scene, like the way music snobs talk about Pavement.

i read a few of the posts on this 3EB drama, and it seems that people are absolutely confused and even outraged at the idea that not everyone grew up listening to the same music as themselves. and just because they made it to the radio (and the ears of many, many people) does not mean they are automatically not worth such praise.

anyway, third eye blind is the shit- the best stuff never made it to the radio. so yeah, there are lots of fans. there’s just no simple stereotype for everyone else to identify them by. (hipsters and the smiths, the whole ‘emo’ thing, industrial kids, insane clown posse fans… etc etc)

Hoo boy, I am old.  When I think of relevant bands from the ’90s I definitely don’t think of Third Eye Blind.  I’m not even sure I could hum one of their songs to myself, and I have a pretty good ear for music.  Didn’t the Pixies break up in the early ’90s?  Weren’t they hugely influential?  If you asked me my favorite “band” from the ’90s, I’d say Mr. Bungle anyhow, so you know I can’t be trusted as far as the guitar music goes.

IMO the most influential/enduring American music in the ’90s wasn’t rock based anyhow, it was the hip hop.  Good and bad.

That was my first concert, a Third Eye Blind concert.  I bought this long sleeved blue shirt, and I wore it till it got holes all in it.  I have a soft spot for them.
